Hastings Dictionary of the Bible · 1898

LOINS. The dress of the Oriental nations being loose, it was necessary, when they were travelling or working, to gird up their garments and fasten them about their loins. See Clothes. Hence the expression is figuratively used, 1 Pet 1:13, to denote a state of mind in which the soul is prepared to work and exert itself under the influence of divine grace.
