Luke 6 — EMTV
Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath
6Verse 1Now it came to pass on the+second chief Sabbath, that He was going through the grain fields. And His disciples were picking the heads of grain and were eating them, rubbing them in their hands.Verse 2But some of the Pharisees said to them, “Why do you do what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?”Verse 3But Jesus answering them said, “Have you not even read this, what David did when he became hungry, he and those who were with him:Verse 4how he entered into the house of God, took and ate the showbread, and also gave some to those with him, which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat?”Verse 5And He said to them, “The Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”Verse 6Now it happened that on another Sabbath, He entered the synagogue and was teaching. And there was a man there whose right hand was withered.Verse 7And the scribes and Pharisees were observing if whether He would heal on the Sabbath, that they might find an accusation against Him.Verse 8But He knew their thoughts, and said to the man who had the withered hand, “Arise and stand in the midst.” And he arose and stood.Verse 9Then Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one thing: Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?”Verse 10And when He had looked around at them all, He said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored as whole as the other.Verse 11But they were filled with fury, and they were discussing with one another what they might do to Jesus. The Twelve Apostles
Verse 12Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and He was spending the night in prayer to God.Verse 13And when it became day, He summoned His disciples, and having chosen twelve from them, whom He also named apostles:Verse 14He chose Simon, whom He also named Peter, and Andrew his brother; James and John; Philip and Bartholomew;Verse 15Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called the Zealot;Verse 16Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot who also became a traitor.Verse 17And having come down with them, He stood on a level place, with a crowd of His disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and from the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear Him and be healed of their diseases,Verse 18as well as those who were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were being healed.Verse 19And all the crowd was trying to touch Him, because power was going out from Him, and was healing them all.The Beatitudes
Verse 20Then He lifted up His eyes toward His disciples, and said:“Blessed are you who are poor,
For yours is the kingdom of God.
Verse 21Blessed are you who hunger now,
For you shall be filled.
Blessed are you who weep now,
For you shall laugh.
Verse 22Blessed are you when men shall hate you,
And when they shall exclude you,
And shall revile you, and cast out your name as evil,
Because of the Son of Man.
Verse 23Rejoice in that day and leap for joy!
For behold, your reward is great in heaven;
For in like manner their fathers did to the prophets.
Jesus Pronounces Woes
Verse 24But woe to you who are rich,Because you have received your consolation.
Verse 25Woe to you who have been filled,
For you shall be hungry.
Woe to you who laugh now,
For you shall mourn and weep.
Verse 26Woe to you when men speak well of you,
For in like manner their fathers would do to the false prophets.
