Ezekiel 23:3

And they committed whoredoms When they came down into Egypt, and sojourned there, possibly they might commit Bodily Whoredoms, but Spiritual Whoredoms; i. e. Ezekiel 23:8

Ezekiel 23:9

Wherefore For this boundless Idolatry, and Lewdness. I have delivered Long agone I have delivered the Ten Tribes: First, P l put them under Tribute, 2 Kings 15.19, 20. about 200 years before our Prophets time: Then Tiglath-Pi ser, 2 Kings 15.29. and finally into Salmanezer's hand, who destroyed the Kingdom, 2 King. 17.6. her into the hand of her lovers, into the hand of the Assyrians, upon whom Punisht them for their sins by those, were fellow sinners with her. she doted.

Ezekiel 23:12

She doted upon the Assyrians her neighbours, captains and rulers, clothed most gorgeously, horse men riding upon horses, all of them desirable young men. This verse is the same with verse 6 which see; only the cloathing there of Blue, is here clothing of Beauty, i. e. most beautiful.

Ezekiel 23:13

Ezekiel 23:14

And that she increased Added to the number of her Idolatries. her whoredoms: for when she saw Where ever 'twas, the Jews saw there 'twas they doted on their persons and habits; it is probable enough they might see them in the Idol Temples, or in the House of the King of Iudah, or of the great men, who promoted the friendships, and Leagues with these Nations. men pourtrayed upon the wall, the images The counterfeits of Strangers, and such as were far off, as the Chaldaeans were. of the Chaldeans pourtray'd with vermilion Which as 'tis a very glossy and shining colour, so duly mixt with Ceruse, does lively express the colour of mans flesh.,

Like an in atiable, and most impudent Adulteress she fell into most inordinate affection for their persons on sight of their pictures.

Ezekiel 23:17

And the Babylonians came The Prophet prosecuteth the Allegory, the Adulteress sent, and invited, and here the Chaldeans comply with it, they came, Embassadors no doubt first to make a Confederacy, and then free intercourse in Trade and Religion too. to her into the bed of love, So the impudently lascivious call the polluted, forbidden bed, as the Harlot, Prov. 7.18. It is like with this commerce, and Confederacy the lustful Babylonians did spread that disease, the Jewish nation were too much inclined to corporal Adulteries, and Fornications, but metaphorically, it is a delightful communicating with them in their Idolatry in their Idol Temples, and Feasts. and they defiled Made her unclean, and loathsom. her with their whoredom Spiritual and corporal., and she was polluted Greatly defiled, as the doubling the expression imports. with them, and her mind was alienated Like an arrant Adulteress, wearied, but not satisfied with her Adulterers, she changeth mind, and friendships, and seeks new on s. Ezekiel 23:19

Ezekiel 23:23

The Babylonians and all the Chaldeans These are known., Pekod Some reckon these the Titles of some of the great Commanders in this Army, which come against Ierusalem, but they are names of distinct Countries, or Provinces under the Babyloni h Government, and so Pekod is the Province between Tigris, and Ly s Rivers; in this was old Ninive, and was the principal Province of the Kingdom, though some others think Pekod was Bactriana, now called Vsbeck, and Corass n, fierce thievish, and barbarous of old., and Shoa Either Sia in Arme ia, or the S ai, among which were the Adiabeni, and this contained the middle part of the Kingdom of Babylon, and was Assyria Mediana., and Koa This bordered on Media, the inhabitants called Ko ai, and dwelt about A bel, or Arbelis, or A bela, and comprehended Ganyamela, where a Fortress Ganga looks like this Koha, being easily changed from Koa to Ganga by change of the original Letters into G. and into G, a people too like enough to be cruel, and barbarous by their very scituation., and all All these Sons, or subjects of the Assyrian Monarchy, or Confederates. the Assyrians with them: all of them desireable Most of these are already explained ver. 6. where these were objects of love, now they are objects of terrour, so God turns the occasions of mens sins into occasions of greater terrour, and punishment. young men, captains, and rulers, great lords, and renowned Heb. called, or invited first by the Jews to sin with them, ver. 16. let. i. now called of God to punish their fellow sinners., all of them riding upon horses.

Ezekiel 23:25

And deprive thee of all the right, and comfortable use of all thy labour, which they will exact of thee in Captivity, and make thee know a Slave has no right to any thing., and shall leave thee naked Both literally, thou shalt not have clothes to cover thy nakedness, and figuratively, thou shalt be left in a most disgraced state, and the shame of all thy sins shall cover thee: All this, as this Prophet usually does, is doubled to affect the more. and bare: and the nakedness of thy whoredoms shall be discovered, both thy lewdness and thy whoredoms.

Ezekiel 23:30

I will do these things unto thee, because thou hast gone a whoring after the heathen, and because thou art polluted with their idols. This verse gives the same reason, which has been often given, why the Lord proceeds in this severity, because as an obstinate, lewd, untractable Adulteress abuseth the best Husband, till none can forbear, so had the Jews dealt with God, and God will deal with them.

Ezekiel 23:31

Thou O Ierusalem and Iudah. hast walked Hast run into the same sinful enormities. in the way of thy sister Samaria, and the ten Tribes, both great Idolatresses., therefore will I give her cup Of judgments, and sorrow exprest frequently by a Cup, Psal. 75.8. and Ier. 25.15. Ezekiel 23:33

Ezekiel 23:34

Thou shalt even drink it Thou shalt stagger with sorrows, that shall intoxicate, and astonish, in the verse each part explains the other, sorrow explains drunkenness, astonishment explains sorrow, desolation explains astonishment, and the cup of Samaria, el ewhere called the line of Samaria explains all: Samaria was made a heap, Mic. 1.6. so shall Ierusalem be., and suck it out The dregs shalt thou drink, and multiply thine own sorrows., and thou shalt break Either out of indignation, or to suck out what was imbibed. the sheards thereof, and pluck off thine own breasts Which tempted others, and undid thy self, for which cause thou now revengest thy self upon thy self.: for I have spoken it, says the Lord GOD. Nothing shall divert the punishment.

Ezekiel 23:35

Therefore thus says the Lord GOD; Because thou hast forgotten Chap. 22.12. which is here explained by what follows, 'twas a willful forgetting of God, and voluntary despising his Law, Ordinances, Worship, Favour, and Presence, so God is cast behind a sinners back. me, and cast me behind thy back, therefore bear The guilt, I will impute it, the punishment, I will not pardon it, and the shame, for I will pour out contempt upon thee, bear both sorrow and reproach of thy sins. thou also thy lewdness and thy whoredomes.
